Opening Doors for Fire and Rescue Stations

Crawford UK has installed doors for the Fire and Rescue Authority throughout the UK for over 30 years, some of which are only now being replaced.

As it is so important for the doors to be opened efficiently Crawford UK adopts a strategy for the Fire and Rescue Authorities where by the doors are looked after for their whole life from conception to replacement including all servicing and maintenance. With this in mind Crawford UK have a team of 50 service engineers which allow a national coverage with 4 hour response times.  Their National Spare Parts Centre is located in Stoke-on-Trent ensuring any components can be dispatched within 24 hours and allows speedy repairs to be completed – which is extremely important to the fire and rescue service.

A recent example during 2008 involved eight old existing Crawford sectional doors which were replaced for Staffordshire Fire and Rescue at their Cheadle and Wombourne Fire Stations.

Both stations underwent significant building changes. Cheadle station was extended and Wombourne was fully refurbished with the demolition of several old buildings. Crawford worked closely with the contractor at each location to ensure that the stations were able to continue operating during the building programme.

Crawford supplied eight 542 insulated Overhead sectional doors with sections which included full width double glazing to maximise daylight without compromising security and providing the driver with full visibility to the outside of the door. To the inside of each exit door Red/Green traffic lights are interlocked to the doors, when the lights turn green the driver knows the door is fully open and can exit in safety. Also each exit door is fitted with double sets of safety photocells, the door will auto close when the high level beam is broken, and the lower photocell beam is for personnel safety. All doors are electric operation with new single phase high performance motors and each door can be manually operated should the stations have any power failure.

Darren Smith, Watch Manager at Wombourne Station said “With the additional windows on the front doors this has improved the daylight to the bays and has made it friendlier to the surrounding community looking in.  The automatic closing of the doors ensures we don’t have to stop and close the doors allowing us to get to the call we are attending in the fastest time.”
